Overview

The Commonwealth Professional Fellowships let mid-career professionals spend between 6 weeks and 3 months at a UK host organisation on a bespoke programme of professional development. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) runs them as one strand of the Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, which also includes Academic Fellowships. The CSC provisionally plans around 40 fellowships a year, with approximately 30 for citizens of Commonwealth countries eligible for overseas development assistance (ODA). Each host organisation designs its own programme, and candidates apply to a specific one.

Pakistan is on the ODA-eligible country list. The 2026/27 round opened at 9:00 BST on 28 July 2026 and closed at 16:00 BST on 25 August 2026, for fellowships starting between mid-February and mid-March 2027. The CSC has not announced the next round, so any date for 2027/28 is an estimate. Fellows receive a return airfare, a monthly stipend, a visa fee refund and an arrival allowance, and they must return home and to their employer afterwards.

Benefits

  • Approved return airfare from your home country to the UK

  • Reimbursement of the standard visa application fee

  • Monthly stipend of £2,218 GBP, or £2,753 GBP for London metropolitan area hosts (2025/26 rates), paid monthly or pro rata

  • Arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09 GBP, which includes an element for warm clothing

  • Host-agreed costs for short courses, conferences and visits to other UK organisations: up to £1,000 GBP for programmes of 6 weeks to 2 months, and up to £2,000 GBP for programmes of 2 to 3 months (paid directly to the host)

  • Additional disability support after a needs assessment, if you declare a disability

  • Total value: a 3-month fellowship outside London carries a stipend of £6,654 GBP, and in London £8,259 GBP, before the airfare, visa fee, arrival allowance and host costs

Eligibility

Basic requirements

  • Be a citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country, hold refugee status in one, or be a British Protected Person. Pakistan is on the ODA-eligible list.

  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country, and do not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

  • Be in employment at the time of application with an organisation you will return to after the fellowship.

  • Sign an undertaking to return to your home country and your previous employer, and leave the UK within 5 days of the end of the award.

Academic and professional requirements

  • Have at least 5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience in a profession related to the fellowship programme by the proposed start date. Voluntary work does not count.

  • Provide at least 2 references, one from your current employer unless you are self-employed. The CSC treats applications without received references as ineligible.

  • No degree level is stated by the CSC. Individual hosts can add their own academic or sector requirements.

Language requirements

  • The CSC page states no English test. Host programmes may require one, so check each programme PDF.

Ineligibility conditions

  • Anyone who has held a Commonwealth Fellowship in the last 5 years

  • Candidates not available from the prescribed start date

  • Anyone convicted of bribery, who is banned for up to 5 years

Pakistan-specific notes

  • Hosts set their own country and sector rules. The University of East London programme names Pakistan and expects early or mid-career academic staff with a bioscience background. Other hosts may restrict by country or recruit from their own networks.

  • Several hosts recruit from established networks, which the CSC marks on its page. Contact those hosts before applying.

Required documents

At application submission (CSC Central online form)

  • Scan of your passport or national identity card

  • Academic and professional qualifications listed in the form (where applicable)

  • At least 2 references, with one from your current employer, received by the CSC through the system

  • Form content: up to 10 publications and prizes, employment history (up to 100 words per job), a statement on work experience (up to 300 words), a 4-part Development Impact statement, objectives for the award, the next 2 years and the longer term, a personal statement (up to 500 words) and a voluntary and leadership summary (up to 500 words)

If selected

  • Health and disability form, required before a Confirmation of Award

  • Visa information form, signed award acceptance form, signed Client Care Letter and a copy of your passport personal details page, before the CSC secretariat issues a Certificate of Sponsorship

  • Due diligence information if the CSC asks for it

Before travelling and during the award

  • Entry clearance under a Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange visa, meeting UK immigration rules

  • A share code from your eVisa, and your passport entry stamp or boarding documents at the start and end of the fellowship

Pakistan-specific notes

  • The CSC page does not mention HEC attestation for fellowships. Ask the host if it needs attested documents.

Application process

  1. Confirm that you have at least 5 years of relevant full-time work experience, counting paid work only.

  2. Confirm that your employer will take you back after the fellowship, and that you hold no UK indefinite leave to remain.

  3. Read the CSC's list of host organisation programmes when the round opens (expected July 2027, unverified).

  4. Choose the programme that matches your job, and read its programme PDF for country, sector and English rules.

  5. If the host marks "Recruiting from an established network: Yes", contact the host before applying.

  6. Ask 2 referees to write for you, one of them your current employer, so the letters arrive by the deadline.

  7. Draft every answer offline, keeping to the word limits: 200, 100, 250 and 100 words for the four parts of the Development Impact statement.

  8. Apply through the CSC Central form before the closing time (expected August 2027, unverified; in the 2026 round this was 16:00 BST, or 8:00 pm in Pakistan).

  9. Wait for the selection result. The current CSC page publishes no date.

  10. If selected, return the health and disability form, visa information form, award acceptance form and Client Care Letter.

  11. Apply for your visa with the Certificate of Sponsorship details the CSC sends, and book the approved flight.

  12. Start and finish on the dates in your Notification of Award, because the CSC usually cannot change them afterwards.

Additional info

  • The CSC provisionally plans around 40 fellowships across both strands, with approximately 30 for ODA-eligible countries. It does not publish a Pakistan figure. Verify manually.

  • The CSC publishes no interview. Applications are assessed on the quality and relevance of the programme, development impact and candidate potential.

  • The 2026/27 host list has 23 organisations, of which 17 run Professional Fellowships. Each host publishes proposed programme dates and a priority theme, and lists whether it recruits from an established network.

  • Fellows must stay in the UK throughout, cannot take paid work, and need CSC approval for any overseas travel.

  • The CSC charges no application fee.

Tab 6: FAQs

1. When is the deadline for the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships from Pakistan?
The latest round closed at 16:00 BST on 25 August 2026, which was 8:00 pm in Pakistan. It opened at 9:00 BST on 28 July 2026, or 1:00 pm in Pakistan, and the CSC accepts no applications or documents outside its online form. Those fellowships start between mid-February and mid-March 2027. The CSC has announced no 2027/28 round. If it follows the same pattern, expect it to open in July 2027 and close in August 2027, but treat that as unverified.

2. Can I apply with less than 5 years of work experience?
No. The CSC requires at least 5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience in a profession related to the programme, by the proposed start of the fellowship. Voluntary work does not count towards the 5 years. You must also be employed when you apply, at an organisation you will return to afterwards. Check each host's own PDF as well, since some set extra sector requirements.

3. Do I need IELTS or TOEFL as a Pakistani applicant?
The CSC page lists no English language test for the fellowships. Each host organisation can still set its own requirements in its programme PDF, and some will expect good working English for placements and training. Read the PDF for every programme you consider, and contact the host if it is silent on language.

4. How much money will I actually receive?
The monthly stipend is £2,218 GBP, or £2,753 GBP for London metropolitan area hosts, at 2025/26 rates, paid monthly or pro rata. You also get an approved return airfare, a refund of the standard visa fee, an arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09 GBP and, through the host, up to £1,000 or £2,000 GBP for courses and visits. A 3-month fellowship outside London pays a £6,654 GBP stipend. Rates may change, so confirm them when a round opens.

5. Can I bring my spouse or family?
The CSC page lists no funding for a spouse or dependants. Fellows must reside in the UK throughout the award, cannot take paid work and need CSC approval for any overseas travel. Fellowships are short, at 6 weeks to 3 months. Ask the CSC welfare team at welfare@cscuk.org.uk about dependants and visa rules before accepting, and do not assume extra support exists.

6. Can I apply if I already live or have worked in the UK?
It depends on your status. You must be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country and should not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK. You also cannot have held a Commonwealth Fellowship in the last 5 years at the time of taking up the award. Previous UK study or work is not named as a bar, but check with the CSC if your residence history is complex.

7. Do I need a job to apply?
Yes. You must be employed when you apply, at an organisation you will return to after the fellowship. Fellows sign an undertaking to return to their home country and previous employer, and to leave the UK within 5 days of the end of the award. One of your 2 references must come from your current employer unless you are self-employed.

8. Where is the interview held in Pakistan?
The CSC publishes no interview stage for the fellowships, so there is no interview location in Pakistan. Applications are assessed on the quality and relevance of the programme, development impact and candidate potential. Hosts that recruit from established networks may contact candidates directly, so check each host's page and consider contacting it before you apply.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission plans around 40 fellowships a year, and approximately 30 of them are set aside for citizens of countries eligible for overseas development assistance, a group that includes Pakistan. That is a small pool for a very wide field of mid-career professionals, which is why the strongest applications read like a plan for a specific workplace rather than a general wish to learn in the UK.

This guide is for Pakistani professionals who want to understand the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships: a placement of 6 weeks to 3 months at a UK host organisation, with a monthly stipend, airfare and visa fee paid, and no degree at the end. It covers who qualifies, how to choose among the host programmes, how to write the form and what goes wrong. One caution comes first. The 2026/27 round closed at 16:00 BST on 25 August 2026, and the CSC has not announced the next round, so the timings below are estimates until it does. For funding figures and the fact sheet, see the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships listing.

Before you start: eligibility reality check

Most failed applications fall on rules that are simple to test. Run through them before choosing a host.

Five years means five years of paid work. The CSC requires at least 5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience by the proposed start date, and it excludes voluntary work from the count. The experience must relate to the subject of the programme you choose, not just to your general career.

You must hold a job to return to. You need to be employed when you apply, at an organisation that will take you back after the fellowship. Fellows sign an undertaking to go back to their home country and previous employer, and to leave the UK within 5 days of the end of the award.

Your references have to arrive. You need at least 2 references, one of them from your current employer unless you are self-employed. The CSC treats an application as ineligible if references do not arrive, so referees need as much notice as you do.

Your residence and status matter. You must be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country, and you should not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK. You also cannot have held a Commonwealth Fellowship in the last 5 years.

The host sets extra rules. The CSC's list is only the first filter. Each host organisation publishes a programme PDF with its own eligibility, and some narrow the field by country, sector or job type. The University of East London, for example, names Pakistan and expects early or mid-career academic staff with a bioscience background.

This is not an academic route. A separate Academic Fellowships strand exists for PhD holders employed by universities, and the CSC runs the two as one programme.

I could not find an official eligibility quiz, so the CSC's fellowship page and the individual host PDFs are the checks available.

The application timeline

The CSC has not published dates for the next round. These are the dates of the last one and what they suggest.

  • 9:00 BST on 28 July 2026 (1:00 pm in Pakistan): applications opened. Official.

  • 16:00 BST on 25 August 2026 (8:00 pm in Pakistan): applications closed. Official.

  • Mid-February to mid-March 2027: Professional Fellowships in that round start. Official.

  • 22 August 2025: the earlier round closed, according to an older CSC page, which suggests a late-July opening and late-August closing each year.

  • Expected July to August 2027: a next round on the same pattern. Unverified.

The current CSC page gives no results date. An older version said nominated candidates were notified in early September, but do not rely on that. Treat the closing time as firm, because the CSC accepts nothing outside its online form. Once you receive a Notification of Award, the start and end dates are fixed too, since the CSC usually cannot change them afterwards. Put 5 July 2027 in your calendar to check the CSC page.

Choosing a host programme

This choice carries most of the weight, because you apply to a specific programme and not to the CSC in general. The 2026/27 list had 23 host organisations, of which 17 ran Professional Fellowships. Each one publishes proposed programme dates, a priority theme and a PDF with the programme detail and eligibility.

Read three things on each entry before you decide. First, the priority theme: the CSC works under six, covering science and technology, health systems, innovation and entrepreneurship, peace and governance, crisis resilience, and access and inclusion. Second, the dates: programmes run from about 4 weeks to 3 months within a mid-February to mid-March start window, and you will need leave approved by your employer. Third, whether the host recruits from an established network. Where the CSC marks "Yes", the host intends to nominate candidates it already knows, and the CSC advises contacting the host before you apply to avoid disappointment.

Then check the PDF for who the host wants. Some programmes are built for named countries or groups, and descriptions from earlier rounds for hosts that returned in 2026/27 referred to specific African countries. Others, like the University of East London's bioscience programme with five places, name Pakistan directly. A placement that names your country and matches your job is a better bet than a famous host that recruits elsewhere.

Finally, pick the programme whose content you can turn into a plan for your own workplace. The CSC assesses programme quality and relevance, development impact and candidate potential, so the link between what the host teaches and what you will change at home is the core of your application.

The form and the selection process

The CSC publishes no interview stage. Your written application is what gets assessed, so use every field. The Development Impact statement has four parts with strict limits: up to 200 words on how the fellowship relates to a CSC theme and to development issues at global, national and local level, up to 100 words on how you will apply the skills, up to 250 words on the outcomes, timeframe and beneficiaries, and up to 100 words on how the impact could be measured.

Be concrete in Part 3. State a number of beneficiaries, a date and a change someone could observe, such as a new laboratory procedure in place within 12 months. Part 4 should name the evidence you would collect rather than say you will monitor progress.

The rest of the form follows similar limits. Each job in your employment history gets up to 100 words explaining its relevance to the programme, and a separate statement of up to 300 words covers your experience. The personal statement and the voluntary and leadership summary each allow up to 500 words. You also state objectives for the award itself, the next 2 years and the longer term, and upload a scan of your passport or national ID card. Write everything offline first, and ask your 2 referees early so the letters arrive before the closing time.

After selection the CSC runs due diligence checks, so cooperate quickly if it asks for information. You then complete a health and disability form, return a signed award acceptance form and Client Care Letter, and apply for a Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange visa with the sponsorship details the CSC sends. During the fellowship you cannot take paid work, and you need CSC approval for travel outside the UK.

Common mistakes that sink Pakistani applications

Counting volunteering towards the 5 years. The CSC excludes voluntary work, so applications that depend on it fail the experience rule.

Choosing a host by name rather than fit. A programme built for other countries or for a different job type will not score well, whatever its reputation.

Ignoring the "established network" flag. If the host recruits from its own contacts, an application without prior contact has weaker odds.

Weak or late references. A missing letter makes the application ineligible, and a generic letter from a non-employer does little.

Vague impact statements. Reviewers want outcomes, a timeframe, named beneficiaries and a way to measure change.

Having no job to return to. The CSC requires current employment and a return undertaking, so freelancers need to show they are self-employed and will resume that work.

Assuming family can come. The CSC lists no support for dependants, and the fellowship is short.

What if you don't get the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship

If the programme does not suit you, or the next round is delayed, consider these routes. Each needs its own verified listing before you rely on it.

  1. Commonwealth Academic Fellowships. The CSC's other strand is for PhD holders employed by a university, with 3-month placements.

  2. Commonwealth Shared Scholarships. These fund one-year taught master's courses at UK universities, and third-party guides expect applications to open in November 2026.

  3. Chevening Scholarships. The UK government's master's scheme is open to Pakistani applicants, but confirm the current cycle and work experience rules.

  4. Training offered directly by host organisations. Some of the 2026/27 hosts run their own programmes and may accept direct enquiries.

Next steps

  1. Check the CSC's fellowships page on 5 July 2027 for an announced round, and email cfp@cscuk.org.uk if it is silent.

  2. Write down your paid, relevant work history now, so you can see whether you reach 5 years by the start date.

  3. Ask your employer for a conversation about a return commitment and leave, and identify a current-employer referee.

  4. Open the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships listing for the full fact sheet.
